Buying a Bed

Buying a bed, is not always an easy experience, but we must all spend some time looking and trying as many as possible, before buying.  Over the next couple of pages, we aim to give you as much advice as possible on what to look for in a new bed, the sizes and some helpful facts and figures.

A rough guide to bed sizes

3'-00" x 6'-3" 90cm x 190cm
4'-00" x 6'-3" 120cm x 190cm
4'-6" x 6'-3" 135cm x 190cm
5'-00" x 6'-6" 150cm x 200cm
6'-00" x 6'-6" 180cm x 200cm

How old is your existing bed ?

Most beds should be replaced every 8 - 10 years.  An old bed may look fine, but after so many years of use, the fillings and springs would not be supporting you as well as they should be.  Never accept a second hand bed, unless it is absolutely necessary, firstly beds made before 1986 don't meet the UK's basic fire safety regulations, and secondly old beds are also likely to harbor dust mites and dust mite allergen.

How much should I spend ?

Spend as much as you can afford.  It is true, that the more you spend, the better the quality.  Just think, that a bed is an investment to your health and well being, not just somewhere to lay your head.

If you purchased a bed costing £1,000.00, it would work out at £100.00 per year over ten years.....not much when you consider the support, and better sleep you would get out of it!

Our top tips

Firstly, work out how much you can afford to spend.

When choosing a bed, measure your existing bed at home.  Can you fit a larger bed in the room ?  The more space you have the better.

Do you need extra storage?  Most divan beds are available with drawers, although it costs a little more, it may be worth it.

Unless absolutely necessary, try to buy a complete divan bed, keeping your existing base could reduce the lifespan of your new mattress.

If you suffer from back problems, mention this when you are looking for a new bed.  The sales person can then advise you on firmer or more supportive mattresses.
